One of Egypt’s most widely-read newspapers El-Watan has published a list of 30 alleged Muslim Brotherhood fronts and operatives in the U.S. that were tasked with winning public support for the Islamist group.

Citing unnamed “informed sources,” journalist Ahmed al-Tahiri says the Muslim Brotherhood has a “lobby inside America.” Raymond Ibrahim translated the article verbatim. It opens by describing the goal of the political influence operation:

“The sources said that these organizations, which are spread throughout the States, agitated for and were supportive of the decisions taken by Mohammed Morsi’s project to ‘Brotherhoodize’ and consolidate power and gave a favorable opinion to the general American public that Morsi’s decisions were welcomed by the public [in Egypt].

Following the June 30 Revolution, these groups launched a malicious war in order to incite the American administration to take hostile decisions against Egypt, with the aim of bringing the Brotherhood back to  power.”

Background information on a significant number of the identified entities and individuals could not be found, with alternate spellings likely being a major factor. In other cases, Clarion Project research supports the newspaper’s reporting.

The operatives named in the report are:

Dr. Hany Saqr, member of the Egyptian Association of America

He is listed in a U.S. Muslim Brotherhood phone directory from 1992. The phone records of Hamas leader Mousa Abu Marzouk showed that he was in communication with Saqr in 1992. Marzouk was a top leader of the U.S. Muslim Brotherhood network when he lived in the U.S.

Saqr has served as the chairman of the Noor Islamic Cultural Center in Ohio.

Dr. Khalid Lamada in New York

He is the Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors for Islamic Relief USA, a major charity based in Virginia. Lamada is from Egypt and endorsed Mohammed Morsi for president in 2012.

Lamada has also been a board member of the Islamic Society of Bay Ridge in New York and was a co-chairman of the annual convention of the Islamic Circle of North America and the Muslim American Society. In 2004, he was the outreach director of the New Brunswick Islamic Center in New Jersey.

Hamdy Radwan in North Carolina

He has been a member of the board of directors of Islamic Relief USA since November 2012. He was also the president of the Raleigh, N.C. chapter of the Muslim American Society.

He is originally from Egypt and likes multiple pro-Muslim Brotherhood pages on Facebook. In November 2006, he said that Hamas is not a terrorist group and supports a non-violent “revolution with the law of the land.”

Ahmed Shehata, director of the Egyptian American Organization for Democracy and Human Rights

The Egyptian Americans for Democracy and Human Rights website does not list its personnel, but the organization does have strong links to the Muslim Brotherhood.

Shehata’s LinkedIn page confirms he is from Egypt and is the Vice President of Egyptian Americans for Democracy and Human Rights. He is also the Operations Manager of Islamic Relief USA. He is an open supporter of the Muslim Brotherhood and he “liked” at least 18 pro-Muslim Brotherhood Facebook pages in 2012.

Dr. Ahmed Ismat El-Bandari

He is incorrectly listed by the Egyptian paper as the president of the Islamic Society of North America, a U.S. Muslim Brotherhood entity.

He is the founder of Islamic Relief USA. His LinkedIn page says he was president and CEO of Islamic Relief USA from 1993 to 2006 and was a senior advisor until August 2009. He has been the president and CEO of the Muslim American Society since 2008.

Dr. Muhammad Amru Attawiya, member of the Organization of Islamic Relief

Amr Attawia is listed as the U.S. Muslim Brotherhood’s New England director in a U.S. Muslim Brotherhood phone directory from 1992. He is a former Vice President of the Muslim American Society and is the current president and chairman of Islamic Relief USA.

Ahmed Shadid in New Jersey

Ahmed Shedeed is the president of the radical Islamic Center of Jersey City. He is an open supporter of the Muslim Brotherhood and former Egyptian President Morsi. He sits on N.J. Governor Christie’s Muslim outreach committee.

Dr. Tariq Hussein, member of the Council on American-Islamic Relations

Dr. Tariq Hussein was introduced on a Muslim talk show as the founder of the Houston chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

The U.S. government listed CAIR as an unindicted co-conspirator in the trial of the Holy Land Foundation, a Brotherhood front that was shut down for financing Hamas. Federal prosecutors said CAIR is an entity of the U.S. Muslim Brotherhood.

The following additional organizations and individuals were listed by El Watan was being Muslim Brotherhood allies but Clarion Project could not corroborate that claim:

  • The Union of Egyptian Imams in North America, represented by Sheikh Muhammad al-Bani
  • The Egyptian American Foundation for Development
  • Dr. Hassan al-Sayah in Virginia
