The future lord mayor of Birmingham in the UK branded British Prime Minister David Cameron an “Islamophobe” and called for a boycott of the government's counter-extremism strategy.
“I think the prime minister is an Islamophobe, he never talks about anything else but Muslim extremism,” Muhammed Afzal told a meeting of the Stand Up To Racism movement. Afzal chairs Birmingham Central Mosque and will become lord mayor of Birmingham in May.
He opposes the ‘Prevent’ strategy, saying it unfairly targets Muslim schoolchildren.
“It is ridiculous that the government is saying Muslims are becoming radicalized. David Cameron says 500 people have gone to Syria to become radicalized, but where is the evidence? And out of a population of three million Muslims in the UK, what kind of percentage is that?
“The government wants to inspect madrassas, which is racist” he added. “Ofsted are losing their neutrality and what we’ll find is that madrassas will be closing down under this legislation which is totally ridiculous.”
Ofsted is the Office for Standards in Education and has the power to inspect British schools. Last week it failed an Islamic school in East London after textbooks endorsing stoning were found in the school library.
“We should oppose this legislation,” Afzal said. “Everyone should sign the petition and make individual efforts to resist it and tell your local MP to support us.”
