The fighters fled from the city after the Government advance, and made it 250 miles north to the Islamic State held city of Mosul, Iraq’s second city with population of two million.
“They were grouped together and made to stand in a circle” a former Iraqi living in the US but in touch with family still in Iraq told FoxNews.com “And set on fire to die.”
The purpose of these highly public executions is to intimidate other fighters into remaining at their posts and dying in combat rather than retreating. “They did the same to fighters after Tikrit” said former intelligence advisor to General Petraeus Michael Pregent. General Petraeus was the commanding general of the coalition forces in Iraq from 2007 to 2008 and the Director of the CIA from 2011 to 2012.
