Reza Kahlili, a pseudonym, worked for the CIA inside Iran in the 1980’s and ‘90s. He is the author the award-winning book, A Time to Betray, he serves on the Task Force on National and Homeland Security and the advisory board of the Foundation for Democracy in Iran.
Reza still maintains contacts within Iran and the Guards. His presentation for the webinar will focus on “New Revelations on Iran’s Nuclear Weapons Program.” The webinar will be moderated by Alex Traiman, Director of the critically-acclaimed documentary Iranium.
Reza spent his childhood in Tehran during the days of the Shah where he recalls his personal and religious freedoms flourishing. He continued his education in America in the 1970’s and returned to Iran shortly after the revolution, eager to take part in building his country.
Even though most Iranians had enjoyed varying degrees of success and Westernization under the Shah, the Ayatollah Khomeini’s message resonated with the population whose political choices had been denied to them under the Shah.
It was then that Reza joined the Revolutionary Guards, an elite force that served Khomeini, thinking that his would be a way to build democracy in Iran.
Yet instead of finding the path towards a new beginning for his country, Reza discovered a tyrannical ayatollah bent on plunging Iran into a dark age of religious fundamentalism and causing his fellow countrymen to turn on each other. Shaken to his very core after witnessing the atrocities at Evin Prison -- atrocities that hit very close to home -- a shattered and disillusioned Reza embarked on a mission that would change his life forever. He returned to America and emerged as “Wally,” a spy for the CIA.
Counterintelligence, coded communications, escape tactics and evasion dominated his new life. He risked exposure daily. After several close calls, Reza managed to leave Iran. His CIA activities continued in Europe for a few more years before he and his family finally moved to America.
After the 9/11 attack, Reza activated a handful of sources within Iran and once again contacted the CIA. He continues to serve until today as an active voice for a free Iran.
